Contributory Parent Visa 173 (Temporary)
This temporary visa lets a parent of a settled Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen stay temporarily in Australia.
Stay: 2 years
- you must be be sponsored by an eligible child who is a settled Australian citizen, Australian Permanent resident or Eligible New Zealand citizen
- you must meet the balance-of-family test
- you must meet all visa conditions and follow Australian law
- you must not have a Sponsored Parent (Temporary) (Subclass 870) visa when applying for this visa
With this visa you can
- live in Australia for up to 2 years
- work and study in Australia (you will not receive government support)
- apply for a permanent Contributory Parent visa (subclass 143) visa
You must
- be sponsored by an eligible child who is a settled Australian citizen, Australian Permanent resident or Eligible New Zealand citizen
- meet the balance-of-family test
- meet all visa conditions and follow Australian law
- not have a Sponsored Parent (Temporary) (Subclass 870) visa when applying for this visa
Note: A concession to allow visas to be granted to applicants in Australia would be extended to eligible Parent visa applicants during the COVID-19 period.
With this visa you can
- live in Australia for up to 2 years
- work and study in Australia (you will not receive government support)
- enrol in Australia’s public health care scheme, Medicare
- apply for a permanent Contributory Parent visa (subclass 143)

You can spread the cost of the permanent visa over a number of years by applying in 2 steps:
- first, apply for the temporary Contributory Parent (Temporary) (subclass 173) visa, then
- apply for the permanent Contributory Parent (subclass 143) visa
How long you can stay
This is a temporary visa. You can stay in Australia for 2 years.
The visa period starts on the date you enter Australia after you are granted the visa.
The visa is granted with multiple entry. You can travel outside Australia and return as many times as you want within two years.
Stay longer
You can’t stay in Australia longer by extending or reapplying for this visa. You can apply for a different visa.
Include family
You can include members of the family unit in your application when you apply.
You will be required to include details of all your family members, whether they are migrating or not, when you fill out the application form.
If you have a partner, include their details in your application even if they are not applying for the visa with you.
Family members who apply for the visa must meet our health and character requirements. Family members who are not coming to Australia might also have to meet our health and character requirements.
Apply from
You can be inside or outside Australia when you apply for the visa. You must be outside Australia when we decide on your application.
If you apply in Australia, any family members who apply with you must also be in Australia, but not in immigration clearance, when you apply. If you apply outside Australia, any family members who apply with you must also be outside Australia when you apply.
If you apply for this visa in Australia while on a temporary visa with a no further stay condition, your application will be invalid, unless you apply for a waiver of this condition.
Processing times
We don’t provide processing times for this visa. Applications for this visa are subject to capping and queueing.
Your application might take longer to process if:
- you do not fill it in correctly
- you do not include all the documents we need or we need more information from you
- it takes us time to verify your information
We cannot process your application if you do not pay the correct visa application charge. We will notify you if this is the case and if necessary return your application.
Family migration visas are in high demand. It might take several years for this visa to be granted.
Assessment
We assess applications for this visa in 2 stages.
- Check eligibility and either add the application to the queue or refuse it.
- Continue assessing the application when a place becomes available and make a decision.
Don’t arrange to move to Australia until we grant the visa. We will let you know in writing if we grant you the visa.

Your obligations
You and your family members must meet all visa conditions and follow Australian laws.
Visa label
We will digitally link your visa to your passport. You will not get a label in your passport.
Have a sponsor
You must be sponsored for this visa.
Usually you would be sponsored by an eligible child. If your child is under 18, you can be sponsored by an eligible relative or community organisation.
We must approve the sponsorship.
Meet the balance-of-family test
You must meet the balance-of-family test. You meet the balance of family test if:
- at least half of your children and step-children are eligible children, or
- there are more eligible children living in Australia than any other single country
Meet the health requirement
You and any family members who apply for the visa with you must meet our health requirement.
We might also ask that other non-migrating family members meet the requirement.
Meet the character requirement
You and any family members who apply for the visa with you must meet our character requirement.
We might also ask that other family members meet the requirement.
Have paid back your debt to the Australian Government
If you or any family members owe the Australian Government money, you or they must have paid it back or have an approved arrangement in place to pay it back.
Not have had a visa cancelled or a previous application refused
You might not be eligible for this visa if you have had a visa cancelled or refused while you were in Australia.
Sign the Australian Values Statement
If you are 18 years of age or older, you must:
- have read, or had explained to you, the Life in Australia book
- sign the Australian Values Statement to confirm you will respect the Australian way of life and obey Australian laws.
Best interests of the child
We will not grant this visa if it is not in the best interests of an applicant under 18.
